What is the Importance of Teaching Aids in Learning?

Article shared by Senthil Kumar
To make learning very effective it is not only necessary to utilize the factors and techniques that facilitate learning, the teacher are to create certain conditions in the class-room that may improve learning.

These conditions are providing teaching aids, creating rivalry and co-operation, giving the knowledge of progress and success, praising or reprimanding and guiding learning.

Visual Aids

Visual aids make learning concrete and meaningful. You may describe the physical features of the Indo- Gangetic plain, but motion pictures, filmstrips, maps, charts, diagrams; pictures would make your verbal description concrete.

An additional meaning is attached to verbal instruction when teaching aids are used. These are simply supplementary devices and not the sup planters of what the teacher can do. The following are the uses of teaching aids:

Uses

(1) There is a belief that some students are eye-minded, some auditory-minded and some verbal-minded. Those who are verbal-minded can be easily taught through verbal instructions but for the rest visual aids are necessary.

Whether the above belief is sound or not, whether pupils can be so sharply differentiated or not is not the question. The fact is that the more organs are used in learning, the more effective the learning sensory becomes. The abstract notions become easy to understand when they are presented through motion pictures or T.V. or such other teaching aids.

(2) Instructional aides provide substitutes to objects and situations that cannot be presented in the class-room. The science exhibition that is held at a far-off place cannot be brought into the science room but through a T.V. programe the whole of it can be viewed in a short period.

(3) Much of school learning involves symbols and abstractions. Language is conceptual. Arithmetic is even more conceptual. It means that the teacher who is teaching language or arithmetic will have to present varied experiences so that correct concepts may be formed. Instructional aides supply such vivid experiences.

Caution

Teaching aids are aids only. They are not to be so enthusiastically used that effort on the part of the learner is ignored. When a T.V. programme is viewed, precast and telecast work has to be done. The teacher has to connect the programme with the class work he has done previously or will do in the immediate future.

In school, teachers are the one who leads students to learn by using teaching aids. These materials are vital tool in making students learn the way they want to learn. It enables students to learn with the guidance of the teacher for the better understanding of the lesson.
II. Summary/Discussion

Teaching aids are important in the learning process. In contains play a vital role in providing and supporting students learning. It has the capacity to provide learning through various kinds of learner who have different ways to such as auditory and visual learners. It provides concrete explanations and examples for abstract ideas that student find hard to understand.
Even though teaching aids are useful in the learning process, learning of the students should not only rely on it. If the students are not briefed or informs as how they should perceived the teaching aid it may fail. Teachers and students should do their part on the learning process through proper analysis and utilization of teaching aids.

III. Reactions/ Reflection
“Teaching aids are aids only. They are not to be so enthusiastically used that effort on the part of the learner is ignored.”

As the the quote above from the article, it clearly stated that teaching aids are just aids. It should never be used as the one which solely responsible in making the students learn. Teaching aids should be used as a supporting materials that will enhance, supplements, and clarify ideas or information. Teacher-Student Interactions: The Key to Quality Classrooms
By: University of Virginia Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning

The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) describes ten dimensions of teaching that are linked to student achievement and social development. Each dimension falls into one of three broad categories: emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support.

Every day, teachers make countless real-time decisions and facilitate dozens of interactions between themselves and their students. Although they share this commonality, educators all over the country often talk about these decisions and interactions in different ways. The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS), developed at the University of Virginia’s Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning, helps educators view classrooms through a common lens and discuss them using a common language, providing support for improving the quality of teacher-student interactions and, ultimately, student learning.

How is the CLASS organized?

The CLASS describes ten dimensions of teaching that are linked to student achievement and social development. Each of the ten dimensions falls into one of three broad categories: emotional support, classroom organization, and instructional support.

       Emotional support refers to the ways teachers help children develop warm, supportive relationships, experience enjoyment and excitement about learning, feel comfortable in the classroom, and experience appropriate levels of autonomy or independence. This includes:

  •  Positive climate — the enjoyment and emotional connection that teachers have with students, as well as the nature of peer interactions;
  •  Negative climate — the level of expressed negativity such as anger, hostility or aggression exhibited by teachers and/or students in the classroom;
  •  Teacher sensitivity — teachers’ responsiveness to students’ academic and emotional needs; and
  •   Regard for student perspectives — the degree to which teachers’ interactions with students and classroom activities place an emphasis on students’ interests, motivations, and points of view.

         Classroom organization refers to the ways teachers help children develop skills to regulate their own behavior, get the most learning out of each school day, and maintain interest in learning activities. This includes:

  •  Behavior management — how well teachers monitor, prevent, and redirect misbehavior;
  •  Productivity — how well the classroom runs with respect to routines, how well students understand the routine, and the degree to which teachers provide activities and directions so that maximum time can be spent in learning activities; and
  •   Instructional learning formats — how teachers engage students in activities and facilitate activities so that learning opportunities are maximized.

                       Instructional support refers to the ways in which teachers effectively support students' cognitive development and language growth. This includes:

  • Concept development — how teachers use instructional discussions and activities to promote students’ higher-order thinking skills and cognition in contrast to a focus on rote instruction;
  •  Quality of feedback — how teachers expand participation and learning through feedback to students; and
  • Language modeling — the extent to which teachers stimulate, facilitate, and encourage students’ language use..

Synopsis
I. Introduction

Every teacher has his or her way communicating or interacting with their student. Their interaction provides way in building a relation as teacher and learner that makes a room for learning. However, learning doesn’t take place with just plain interaction as teachers who provides instructions and learners who just absorbs what you teach. It takes place within an interaction that provides a healthy environment that enables students to felt that they are accepted as person who need care, understanding, and supports not just in need to learn academic matters. This kind of interaction was emphasized by the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) as developed the University of Virginia’s Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning,

II. Summary/Discussion
The Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) provides a view on the ways how teachers interact to their students inside the school particularly in the class. This interaction doesn’t only includes instructional purposes but also encompassing students growth as a person in terms of emotions, behavior, skills, and more. This enables students to have an environment that caters to developed them as a whole with the teachers as the one who accompany them in their growth. Moreover, the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS)  enumerates the ways that would help teacher to improve their personality towards their students. The manner of the teacher in addressing the different needs of their students was also been given emphasis.  Emotional support, Classroom organization, and Instructional support are three broad categories that it enumerates under that various aspects were enumerated. This thing if done or used would provide a better development and achievement to students. Students would learn better if they have a good rapport to their teacher. It was for the reason that as the students felt that they were accepted, supported, understand, and  cared by their teachers , they would be comfortable and eager to pursue better for their selves.

III. Reactions/ Reflection
The teacher and the students are the main actors in the classroom. Their interactions provides an environment that enables learning to takes place. Students would achieved and develop better if they have teachers that shows concern and provides a good communication between them
However, as quote says “familiarity brings contempt”. Even though there was a need for support emotionally, and in terms of instruction there should always be a reservation. If you would let your student to be much familiar with you or comfortable with there was a tendency that thy would abuse it. As teachers, you have to dealt with your students showing your concern for their development and support as they achieved but you should care on how they perceived you as a person.
As teacher, we are here to help our students to grow and develop as individual. Learning that we taught to them should contribute to their development as a whole not just intellectually. The insights that we share on them should also have an impact to their personality. We should not force them to respond the way we like them to do but instead to response the way they want based on the thing that we show them. On the other hand, it may not be applicable all the time because if we always rely on how they want to respond it may be abusive and deviant so sometimes we need to enforce what we want.

Reflection
"The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can't." — Mark Twain

The quote above,  encouraged us to read good books, However, it’s not always available. If there’s no good books there are good articles to read on. This articles or professional readings brought us knowledge that may be helpful to us. The knowledge that we gain by reading it was beneficial to our intellectual growth. It contributes to our knowledge and that what I gain as I read the two articles above.

In the first article that I read, the importance of teaching aids were brought to my knowledge. It enlightens me on how I value the teaching aids that I always prepare for my student. It gives me ideas on how teaching aids contribute to learning of my students. Aside from that, I also learn that teaching aid were a powerful tool that aids students in the learning process so that they can easily understand abstract concepts.

On the second one which was Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) ,it gave me an idea on how teachers should interact with the students. The interaction that should take place was the one that would provide a healthy environment to the students. The environment that should be created have an atmosphere that accepts students and provides supports to students growth. It establishes three broad concepts that would embody those ideas such as Emotional support, Classroom organization, and Instructional support. These allow teachers to think on how they could develop their rapport to their students.

Indeed, reading makes one knowledgeable about the things round the world. The things that you cannot easily learn just by observing and watching  can be found on those pieces of paper. When you read you learn and when you learn there were many windows that would open for you.
